Position Summary:
The overall purpose of the medication aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to residents. Incumbents perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations, and consistent with facility policies. Incumbents also perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort, and well-being of the residents.
Position Responsibilities:
- Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy
- Must demonstrate knowledge of five rights of medication administration
- May take and record vital signs of residents as assigned o as may be required by certain medications
- Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately
- Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse on the appropriate shift
- Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy
- Must be able to push/pull medication cart for extended periods
- Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting
- Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time
- Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner
- May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed nurse per facility policy
- Properly secures medication carts/medication room per state/federal regulations and facility policy
- Attends facility education in-services
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Experience Requirements:
- State certification as a nursing assistant
- State approved medication administration certification
- Complete familiarity with duties of a certified nursing assistant
- Highly developed observation skills are desirable
- Functional literacy in English is required
- Tolerance, patience, empathy and concern are desirable
- Vision must be adequate to read medication labels, etc.
